A medical perspective on Swine Flu
For those who might be interested, here is the contents of an email sent out by a respected New York-based medical practice regarding the Swine Flu:
“Dear Patients,
As you have heard in the media, several cases of “swine flu” have been detected within North America. As of April 26th, 2009, there have been eight confirmed tests in New York City and many others throughout the United States. While this viral outbreak will likely be contained, there are some important facts that we would like you to know.
Symptoms: Symptoms of the swine influenza virus are similar to those of the human influenza viruses. Classically, people experience any of the following: fever, muscle aches, sore throat, vomiting and/or diarrhea. If you experience any of these symptoms, we encourage you to call as quickly as possible as there are medications that can reduce the severity and length of the illness.
Vaccines: At this time, it is not certain that the human influenza vaccine given this past fall/winter offers protection against the swine influenza virus. Thus, it is best to assume that you are not protected at this time.
Medications: If you develop the clinical symptoms of the flu, we would err on the side of treating. Two of the four influenza drugs are effective against the swine flu. The earlier the medication is administered, the better the result.
Prevention: The swine influenza virus is transmitted by the same methods as the human influenza virus. Hand washing is critical. In addition, if you have influenza symptoms, we would advise you to minimize your exposure to the public. For example, we would advise you to not use public transportation, stay home from work, school, etc. If you have symptoms, you should call and we will accommodate everyone in a timely fashion. Because of the contagiousness of this virus, please understand that you may be asked to wear a mask while in the office.”
Please do not consider this to be medical advice. We are in the financing business, after all.
Some hedge funds will be asking the question tonight: which stocks will benefit from this tomorrow a.m.?
